A Jane Russell vest from The Outlaw
Howard Hughes Productions, 1943. A cream-colored short-sleeved leather vest with leather laces connecting both the sleeves to the bodice and the sides together, with 3 tassel ties down the front, bearing a cream-colored label with green lettering inscribed, "United Costumers / Hollywood" and "Jane Russell" written in black ink. Though this was part of the costume which Russell wore in the film, the vest itself was eventually removed. Publicity photos show her wearing the full outfit. The Outlaw made headlines and created outrage from the outset with publicity portraits of Jane Russell posing seductively by a haystack. Director Howard Hughes added fuel to the fire by declaring he had a special bra made for Jane Russell's formidable chest. Because of production code problems, the film was not generally released until 1946 (though it had a very small release in 1943). Accompanied by an 11x14 Bob Landry photo of Jane Russell wearing the vest, which is signed by her.
