Comprising a Tod Browning lifetime membership certificate to the Motion Picture Relief Fund of America, 1924, signed by the President ("Cecil B. De Mille") and Vice-President ("Joseph M. Schenck," possibly a stamp) in ink, stamped number "221," with MPRF seal blind-stamped "California / 1924," framed; a Tod Browning Civil Defense citation certificate from the County of Los Angeles, issued on VJ Day, September 2, 1945, with 8 reproduction signatures of Civilian Defense Organization leaders at bottom. During World War II, Malibu, California's few residents, including Tod Browning, were called upon to perform various civil defense-related jobs because of Malibu's nearness to the Pacific coast. Browning helped with, among other wartime duties, gas rationing, blackouts, and watching for Japanese planes. This citation is for those volunteer services.
