United Artists, 1979. Comprising a Xerographic manuscript, First Draft screenplay, 138 pp, n.d., housed in red wrappers, ownership signature to title page ("Dean Tavoularis"); Xerographic manuscript, Incomplete screenplay by Francis Ford Coppola, 128 pp, December 3, 1975, with 9 additional pages, ownership signature to title page ("Dean Tavoularis"); a group of art department materials, approximately 120 pp, including photographs, drawings, costume designs, call sheets, cast and crew contact info, and more, housed in a red three-ring binder; a production "bible," approximately 126 pp, ownership signature ("Dean Tavoularis") to first page, with budget, weapons and vehicles lists, crew list, wardrobe and makeup breakdowns, research material, and more, housed in a binder with "Apocalypse Now Notes" written to a gray tape on spine; a master scene-by-scene set and prop breakdown, annotated, housed in green wrappers, with a color photograph of Filipino jungle pasted to cover; 13 small snapshots, most color, most dated "May 77" to versos; 6 original drawings, graphite and pen on tracing paper: 1 labeled "PBR Spinner" and 2 depicting Montagnard costumes; stone lions from Kurtz's compound; a Medvac unit; the facade of the temple in Kurtz's compound; 2 color copies of drawings of an alternate title sequence; and more. Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic Apocalypse Now follows Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) in his quest into the Cambodian jungles to assassinate the renegade Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). Filmed on location in the Philippines, massive setbacks - including a typhoon wrecking key sets - infamously caused this sweeping, elaborate production to go wildly over budget and fall weeks behind schedule. Ultimately, Coppola had to put up millions of dollars of his own money to complete the film. Amidst this turbulence, production designer Dean Tavoularis had to craft Apocalypse Now's realistic-looking, yet surreal, vision of the Vietnam War with utmost accuracy. This extensive archive of Tavoularis' production materials shows the full extent of his exhaustive research and preparation. It includes a production "bible" with scene-by-scene set breakdowns, including the film's many deleted sequences. Tavoularis' numerous dense, highly detailed notes and papers cover every aspect of the film, from military advisors' thorough answers about prop and set requirements, to costuming notes, down to minutiae like specific brands of beers and cigarettes required for filming. Tavoularis' outstanding behind-the-scenes snapshots in this lot include several images of Kurtz's jungle compound with its giant stone idol head, the film's climactic explosions in the compound, Montagnard extras, and one featuring Coppola on set. John Milius' initial script included here has an alternate opening and ending. Coppola's rewrite of Milius' script in this lot differs strongly from Milius' and the finished film, and notably has no ending. Despite its troubled production, Apocalypse Now won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and received eight Academy Award ® nominations, including Dean Tavoularis for Best Art Direction.
