A special effects sword used in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Walt Disney, 2003. Brass-hilted small sword in the style of the U.S. Model 1840 musician's sword, with straight blade marked "Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee/Mass" and "India," with special wiring attachment to blade, brass hilt with d-form knucklebow, wire-wrapped grip and ovoid pommel, with brass-mounted scabbard. This sword was used in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film during Will's (Orlando Bloom's) swordfight with Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), specifically for the dramatic effect of the sword striking a door deadly close to Jack's face and then wobbling. It was wired using a special attachment to the blade and through two small holes in its guard's center. The sword's scabbard was "distressed" for the film to make it look well-used.
Provenance: the collection of the film's special effects coordinator, Terry Frazee.
Sword: 32 ½ in; scabbard: 28 in
