Francis Ford Coppola's blockbuster epic crime saga, The Godfather, required production designer Dean Tavoularis to meticulously recreate the look of many eras and countries, including 1890s Sicily, early 20th century Ellis Island, 1940s New York City, 1950s Las Vegas, and Castro-Era Cuba. Coppola and Tavoularis frequently shot on location, from Rome to the Dominican Republic, including transforming part of lower Manhattan into early 20th century Little Italy for Part 2. This extraordinary production archive follows the course of the series' international production, with scripts to all three films, including a differently ordered version of The Godfather, Part II, and The Death of Michael Corleone, which evolved into Part III. The production paperwork primarily covers the second and third films, including Alex Tavoularis' original drawings; correspondence (partly in Italian); and location reference photographs, including several of the buildings used as the homes of Don Ciccio and Don Tommasino, and of the third film's pivotal opera house. A very rare pre-production notebook on Part III refers to the project throughout under its code name, Secret Journal II. Tavoularis received his only Academy Award® for Best Art Direction for The Godfather, Part II. (For a more detailed description of this lot's contents, please refer to the condition report.)
