Michael Curtiz's annotated screenplay of Angels with Dirty Faces
Warner Bros., 1938. Mimeographed and typed carbon manuscript, final screenplay by John Wexley and Warren Duff, 100 pp (missing several pages at end), May 27, 1938, bound with brads in plain blue wrapper, annotated in pencil, "Curtiz" in pencil to title page. Angels with Dirty Faces starred Pat O'Brien as Father Jerry, desperately trying to keep a group of tough street kids (the Dead End Kids) from turning to crime like his boyhood friend Rocky (James Cagney). Director Michael Curtiz's notes to his script are mainly dialogue-related, including the verso of p 55, which is covered with Jerry's expository dialogue and camera directions, all dropped from the finished film. In 1938, Curtiz was nominated for Academy Awards® for Best Director for both Angels with Dirty Faces and Four Daughters.
