A Shirley Temple top hat and tails from Young People
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1940. A black wool small-sized tuxedo jacket with tails, grosgrain lapels, 6 black buttons down the front, a cream-colored hankerchief safety-pinned into the chest pocket, cream-colored faux shirt cuffs with mother-of-pearl buttons inside the bottom of the coat sleeves, with the cuffs each bearing 4 buttons, and a vintage boutonniere still attached, bearing an interior label inscribed, "Macintosh / Studio Clothes / Hollywood." Together with a cream-colored pique tuxedo vest with three mother-of-pearl buttons down the front and a black top hat with an interior stamp inscribed, "Townway / designed by Desmonds," and a cream-colored label inscribed, "1-39 / 1-0351." Designed by Gwen Wakeling. Young People was Shirley Temple's swansong to little girl roles, as well as to Twentieth Century-Fox studio. She had become too mature for the cute-as-a-button roles that made her a star. Temple states in her autobiography that during the filming of one scene, "the orchestra strikes up 'Auld Lang Syne,' and we all sing and wallow in farewell sentiment until 'The End' flashes on the screen. It was a shattering piece of symbolism." Temple wears this costume in a dance number with co-stars Jack Oakie and Charlotte Greenwood as they sing and dance to the tune of "Fifth Avenue."
