A pair of James Dean tuxedo pants from Giant
Warner Bros., 1956. Black wool tuxedo pants with black grosgrain ribbon down the side of each leg, with 4 buttons across the front waistband and 2 buttons across the back, bearing a cream-colored "Warner Bros." tag in green letters inscribed, "Date 5/25/55 / Prod. 403 / Jas (sic) Dean / 2 Pc Tail Outfit / Dbles / 2-8103" written in black ink. Designed by Marjorie Best. Dean wears these pants as part of a complete tuxedo ensemble in the scene where his character, the aging and drunken "Jett Rink," barely escapes a beating by Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson). Though only 24 years old at the time he played the character, James Dean was unforgettable as the ranch hand-cum-millionaire who desires to impress Leslie Benedict (Elizabeth Taylor) through striking oil. Under the expert direction of George Stevens, Dean gave a stellar performance that cemented his career and hinted at even more untapped reserves of talent; unfortunately, Dean died in a car crash as shooting on the film was nearing completion.
