An assistant director's second revised screenplay for Doctor Dolittle
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1967. Xerographic manuscript, second revised screenplay by Leslie Bricusse, 163 pp, June, 1966 (with revision pages as late as September 29), bound in brads in red Twentieth Century-Fox wrappers. Assistant director Richard Lang annotated nearly every page of this script, underlining dialogue, crossing out excised scenes, and noting the props, costumes, etc. required for each scene. This particular draft includes the sequence where the character Matthew (Anthony Newley) sings "Where are the Words?" which was cut from the finished film. Richard Fleischer's mega-budget musical Doctor Dolittle was the first film adaptation of Hugh Lofting's popular children's book series, starring Rex Harrison in the title role. Though not a financial success, Doctor Dolittle received nine Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture, winning two.
