An Una Merkel 2-piece beaded gown from The Merry Widow
MGM, 1952. A 2-piece purple ensemble consisting of a jacket with elaborate beading and embroidery in various shades of purple on the lapel and cuffs and beaded braid on either side of the front, with hook-and-eye closure up the front and quarter-size weights sewn into the hem, with an interior label sewn into the arm lining inscribed in typewritten letters, "Una Merkel." Accompanied by a full-length skirt of the same color with an interior label inscribed in black ink, "Una Merkle" (sic) and an MGM cleaning tag. Wisecracking Una Merkel was a film fan favorite for over 30 years, having appeared in the original 1934 version of The Merry Widow in the role of the queen. In this Lana Turner vehicle, Merkel played the companion, Kitty Riley. Merkel wears this ensemble in, among others, a scene where she helps Turner onto a carriage after Turner becomes enraptured with the warbling of Fernando Lamas. Accompanied by a DVD of the film.
