A James Earl Jones suit from The Great White Hope
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1970. Black and white checked 3-piece Norfolk suit. "Western Costume Co." labels on inside pocket and waistband of trousers, both inscribed, "James E. Jones." "W.C.C." stamps on inside sleeve, waistband of trousers, and on lining of vest. Intricate construction involving Velcro and snap closures. Jones originated the role of boxing champion, Jack Jefferson (a thinly-veiled version of real-life African American boxer, Jack Johnson), on Broadway in 1968, for which he won a Tony Award. He then recreated his performance in the film, which garnered him an Academy Award® nomination. The Great White Hope was a controversial film which focused on race relations and interracial relationships, making it as powerful a film today as the day it was released. Accompanied by a photograph of Jones wearing the garment.
