A Susan Hayward dress from And Now Tomorrow
Paramount, 1944. Tan wool knee-length coat dress with an A-line skirt and two flap pockets and silk lining, bearing a blue-lettered Paramount wardrobe label inscribed, "Susan Hayward," in black ink, as well as a gold "Custom Made / Eddie Schmidt" label and a Paramount cleaning tag. Eddie Schmidt was the favorite tailor of many of Hollywood's leading men, most notably Clark Gable. And Now Tomorrow starred Loretta Young and Alan Ladd, with Susan Hayward in a supporting role as the younger sister. It was her last film under her Paramount contract, and from this point on, she appeared in leading lady roles. Susan Hayward obtained this costume for her personal wardrobe, and a photograph of her wearing it to an event with fiancé Jess Barker in 1943-44 can be seen on page 46 of Eduardo Moreno's book, The Films of Susan Hayward (New Jersey, 1979), which is included with this lot, along with a DVD of And Now Tomorrow.
