A John Wayne peacoat from Reap the Wild Wind
Paramount Pictures, 1942. A navy wool double-breasted peacoat with six gilt metal anchor buttons down the front and two smaller ones at each cuff, with a "Western Costume Co." stamp on the interior lining of the arm and a "SZ 46" written in white ink. The interior pocket bears a cream-colored label with red lettering inscribed, "Western Costume Co." and "John Wayne" written in black ink. Director Cecil B. DeMille allowed Wayne to choose his own costume for this film, and he wears this peacoat throughout most of the movie. This is the first film in which Wayne's character dies, having lost a battle with a giant squid. The scenes with the squid were so realistic that the film won an Academy Award® for "Best Special Effects"; unfortunately, Wayne suffered chronic inner ear problems for the rest of his life as a result of the underwater scenes. Accompanied by a DVD of the film.
