A production design for Citizen Kane
RKO, 1941. Charcoal on vellum, mounted on board. Depicting one of the opening shots of Charles Foster Kane's mansion, Xanadu, with a ruined fountain and collapsing fence in the foreground; this image was ultimately not used in the film. Several captions on the mount have been erased: "Matte / 2 x 2 x 5 /Citizen Kane" and "Dir: Orson Wells" [sic]. This appears to be a preparatory sketch, likely by Mario Larrinaga, for one of his famous matte paintings of Kane's castle on a hill.
