Battleship Potemkin
Mosfilm, 1925. Russian poster, linen-backed. Edition of 1000. Rare Russian film poster for S. Eisenstein's 1925 silent propaganda masterpiece advertising a run at the Uran Theater beginning January 19, 1926. Battleship Potemkin was arguably the most influential motion picture after D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation (1915). Douglas Fairbanks told a German Communist paper, "Battleship Potemkin is the most powerful and profound experience of my life." It did more than any other to introduce Soviet cinema to the West. Many movie buffs consider it the greatest picture ever made. Eisenstein's theory of montage as introduced in this film revolutionized the art of filmmaking. The slaughter on the Odessa Steps remains one of the most famous sequences in all movie history.
