A Betty Hutton costume from The Perils of Pauline
Paramount, 1947. A 2-piece cream-colored satin Asian-inspired pajama set with an intricate hand-sewn floral pattern of braids, beads, and sequins, with an asymmetrical top, a mandarin collar, 9 gilt buttons going down the front which mask the snap and hook-and-eye front closure, and quarter-size weights at the hem, bearing a blue "Paramount Pictures / Ladies Wardrobe" stamp and "MPCC #107" written in black ink on the inside collar, together with pajama bottoms of the same pattern, with "MPCC #107" written in black ink twice on the inside band of the waist. Designed by Edith Head. As silent "B" film actress, Pearl White, Hutton wore this beautifully crafted costume in "Episode 8: The Fatal Idol" segment when she is projecting theatrically in a silent film as she is mercilessly choked by actor Billy De Wolfe. Hutton was at the peak of her popularity in this film, with director George Marshall knowing just how to channel her maniacal energy. Accompanied by a vintage photo and lobby card from the film, showing Hutton wearing the outfit. This outfit was later worn by Janet Leigh in Houdini (1953) and previously exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in their exhibit, "Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry From the Silver Screen" (Sept. 9, 2014 - March 8, 2015).
