Double-sided Opalized Clamshell

Coober Pedy, South Australia
Opalized fossils, like most other Australian opal, are found around the margins of an inland sea that covered about a third of Australia 110 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. Opalized fossils from South Australia and from White Cliffs in NSW are of saltwater marine animals, while opalized fossils from Lightning Ridge are from plants and animals that lived on the land, or in freshwater creeks and rivers. The large majority of opalized clamshells are simply common opal, but the present one is bright and gemmy. Distinguished by a full spectral play-of-color, vivid orange and red, as well as broad flashes of green abound on both sides of this bi-valve mollusk. The reverse side has added interest in the form of a unique hole, most likely drilled by a parasite during the life of the clam. A natural opening at the edge reveals interior chamber of the clam and the hinge is clearly visible. Weighing approximately 79.5 carats and measuring 37.62 x 35.32 x 18.62mm
