Ludwig Guttenbrunn was probably a student of a well-known Austrian religious painter Martin Johann Schmidt and mostly specialised in portraiture. Ludwig travelled in Europe until 1795, when on the recommendation of the Russian envoy in London, he moved to St. Petersburg and later to Moscow. His portraits of Alexey Kurakin (The State Hermitage, St. Petersburg) and Mdm Bibikova (The State Tretiakov Gallery, Moscow) are among the gems created during his Russian "stay".
