A Bohemian part amber stained goblet and crown cover, circa 1837-40

The cover formed as a coronet or crown with panels of hobnail-cut diaper pattern pierced in between, an impressive orb forming the finial, the cup-shaped body with a chamfered rectangular panel engraved with a huntsman on foot attending at the death of a boar brought down by a pack of hounds, a further huntsman on horseback in the distance blowing a horn, the reverse of the bowl with diaper pattern panels and a single viewing lens within a slice-cut panel, raised on an eight-sided spreading stem deeply cut at the base and underneath with fan-shaped barbs and a star pattern with a diaper centre, 40cm high (2)

Footnotes

Identical cutting appears on a goblet with an inscription dated 1837. This example, included in this sale as lot 11, confirms the likely date of manufacture of these remarkable crown-covered goblets. A closely related amber-stained goblet was in part I of this collection, sold in these rooms 11 December 2013, lot 23. Another amber stained example is illustrated by John Sandon, Antique Glass (1999), p.107. Michael Kovacek, Glass of Five Centuries (1990), p.188, mentions that crown-shaped covers were a speciality of the Harrachov glassworks. A crown cover of related shape occurs on a goblet engraved by Dominik Biemann with a portrait of Archduke Franz Karl, see Paul von Lichtenberg, Glasgravuren des Biedermeier, p.119, fig.88.

The boar hunt on the present lot is probably after an 18th century engraving of a work by Johann Ridinger. Von Lichtenberg, op cit, illustrates a number of related subjects by Franz Anton Pelikan. The present lot is, however, the work of a less-accomplished pupil or follower.
