A richly decorated pair of Bohemian goblets and covers, circa 1840-60

Possibly from the Adolfshutte Glassworks (Johann Meyr's Neffen), in the Historismus taste inspired by early German metalwork, the ornamental chalices with campana shaped bowls cut with broad flutes and richly gilded with strapwork and foliate scrolls suspended from grotesque mask heads, the bowls with knopped and gadrooned bases brightly gilded, the stems and spreading facet-cut feet with various gilded designs, the cushioned covers with further intricate gilded scrollwork and tall bottle-shaped finials, 41.5cm high (4)

Footnotes

A very similar example was in the first part of this collection, sold in these rooms 11 December 2013, lot 33.

Saleroom notices

On close examination a mechanical method of printing has been used for the gilded decoration and some of the ruby stain is sprayed on. This indicates that these goblets are reproductions. They were not manufactured in the 19th century and instead they are much later in date than they appear.
