A Bohemian ruby stained footed ceremonial punchbowl, circa 1850-60

Of campana or bell shape with a remarkable deeply-cut barbed rim, engraved all around with a celebration of wine, numerous Bacchanalian boys cavort among barrels, bottles and wine goblets, the scenes linked by the gnarled branches of vines bedecked with a luscious crop of grapes, the bowl cut with broad flutes at the base and raised on a spreading octagonal foot engraved with a border of rococo scrollwork, 40.5cm high

Footnotes

An identical composition by the same hand occurs on a pair of amber stained goblets from the Leslie Scott Collection, illustrated by Keith Middlemas, Antique Coloured Glass, (1971/1979), p.82.
