This vase depicts a statue of Johann t'Serclaes, Count von Tilly (1559-1632), who was an important commander for the Catholic League during the Thirty Years' War. The bronze statue by Ludwig Schwanthaler, created in 1843, is in the Feldherrnhalle on the Odeonsplatz in Munich. The Feldherrnhalle is a classical monument built between 1841 and 1844, commissioned by King Louis I of Bavaria. It was constructed to commemorate the Bavarian army and included two statues of important figures from Bavarian military history, Count von Tilly and Carl Philipp Joseph von Wrede.
Franz Paul Zach worked in Munich and so he has chosen to depict a local monument. This shape of vase was a particular favourite of Franz Zach who often signed his work just with the initial Z. This vase was probably created for him at the Steigerwald Glasshouse. A vase of similar form in blue and white overlay by Zach was in the Hida Takayama Museum of Art, sold at Sotheby's 19 December 2002, lot 41. In the same collection, lot 50 was another vase by Zach depicting a statue in Berlin.
