Footnotes

While working for J and L Lobmeyr in Vienna in 1873-4, Karl Pietsch created a circular plate or plaque representing the Months of the Year, for which he received much praise including a bronze medal. This plaque, now in the Museum für angewandte Kunst in Vienna includes the same three figures seen on the present lot. The plaque is illustrated by Walter Spiegl, Glas Des Historismus (980), p.113, pl. 127.

In Bruno Bucher's catalogue of glass in Austrian Museums (1888), the plaque was illustrated at pl.12, fig.2351 among a selection of Modern Bohemian Glass. Bucher noted that the design was by Th. Hansen and August Eisenmenger and the engraving by Pietsch.
