A Bohemian part amber stained goblet and crown cover, circa 1837-40

The coronet or crown shaped cover finely cut and pierced with panels of hobnail-cut diaper pattern, an orb forming the finial, the cup-shaped body set with a chamfered rectangular panel finely engraved with a huntsman riding with his hounds in pursuit of a stag, the rider cracking his whip, the remainder of the bowl finely cut with diaper pattern panels and a single viewing lens within a sunburst panel, raised on a stepped amber section above an eight-sided spreading stem, the foot deeply cut at the base and underneath with fan-shaped barbs and a star pattern with a diaper centre, 38.5cm high (2)

Footnotes

A similar figure riding with his raised whip occurs on two beakers by Dominik Biemann illustrated by Paul von Lichtenberg, Glasgravuren des Biedermeier, pp.79-80, figs.82 and 83. The present lot is by a far less-accomplished hand using the same design source, probably an 18th century engraving. See also the footnote to the previous lot in this auction.
