The hinged rectangular top with canted corners decorated with a central ivory inlaid shield (unengraved) enclosing a fitted interior with various removable compartments containing a large collection of mother of pearl gaming counters, the lock engraved: Vve P SORMANI & FILS, 10, r Charlot Paris,

Paul Sormani was born in Italy in 1817. The highly successful business he established in Paris was relocated 10, rue Charlot in the 1860s. On his death in 1867 the firm was taken over by his wife and son, renamed VEUVE P.SORMANI ET FILS and later only by his son PAUL SORMANI. In the 1900s the business relocated Boulevard Haussman. The firm produced furniture in a variety of styles, including excellent quality versions in Louis XV and Louis XVI styles.
They exhibited at all the major exhibitions of his time, winning medals in 1849, 1855, 1867, 1878, 1889 and 1900.
