Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) was an Italian general and politician who played a significant role in the history of Italy and is considered by many as one of Italy's modern day founders.
This gun dates to 'The Expedition of the Thousands' in 1860, when Garibaldi and his volunteers (known as 'The Thousand') took timely advantage of the Sicilian rebellion to set sail for Sicily's West coast in the Spring of 1860. When they reached the shores they took control of Marsala and quickly assembled a town council declaring an end to Bourbon rule in Sicily and called upon Garibaldi to rule as dictator 'King Victor Emmanuel.'
Backed by hundreds of Sicilian rebels, the 'Garabaldini' pressed on to capture Palermo – after a victory at Calatafimi en route – where the Neapolitan garrison, under General Ferdinando Lanza, finally capitulated on June 6th, 1860.
