A Composite Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadsword
Second Quarter Of The 18th Century

With broad tapering blade incised with three narrow fullers on each side of the forte with an indistinct mark beyond and each containing an incomplete 'Andria Ferrara' inscription, short fluted ricasso, russet iron guard of slender bars of rectangular section (three of them broken) framing fretted panels pierced with hearts and circles, the main panels centred on saltires, the fluted side panels each with a 'ram's horn' at its base, fore-guards, short rear quillon, fluted globular pommel with flattened button, and later spirally-grooved wooden grip bound with twisted iron wire (surface pitted overall)
