A rare pair of cloisonné enamel 'bajixiang' pricket candlesticks
Each broad bell-shaped base vividly and densely enamelled with scrolling lotus blooms interspersed with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, the bajixiang, below a band of interlocking ruyi-heads, surmounted by a drip-pan similarly decorated and with a six-character zhuanshu seal mark in a line, supporting a smaller drip-pan centred by the gilt pricket, all reserved on a bright turquoise ground, the edges and footrim with gilt borders.

The candlesticks probably formed part of a five-piece altar garniture also consisting of an incense burner, and a pair of vases. The garniture, decorated with appropriate Buddhist iconography such as the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang and leafy lotus scrolls, would have been used for religious or ritual ceremonies, and probably would have graced one of the temples patronised by the Jiaqing emperor and court.
Cloisonné enamel candlesticks bearing the Jiaqing seal mark are very rare. Nonetheless, the shape and decoration combining Buddhist Emblems and motifs, perpetuates styles of candlesticks from the Qianlong period, which were made in various media including cloisonné enamel, lacquer and porcelain.
Compare with a pair of ruby-ground famille rose candlesticks, Qianlong seal marks and period, illustrated in Imperial Porcelain from the Shanghai Museum, The Hague, 2011, pp.92-93, nos.61 and 62. See also a pair of yellow-ground famille rose candlesticks, Jiaqing mark and period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.374. These porcelain counterparts are very similar in shape and decoration to the present lot, including the bell-shaped foot, the drip pan with straight flaring sides, and the placement of decorative motifs.
此對燭台可能原為佛教供器五供中的一部份。供器一般一組五件,包括一只香爐、一對燭台及一對花觚,稱為「五供」,多用於佛教慶典、宗教節日等祭祀活動。鈴有「大清嘉慶年製」款的掐絲琺瑯燭台在傳世品中殊為少見,因此本器可能用於宮廷或由嘉慶帝下旨修建的寺院中。
本器飾八吉祥和纏枝蓮紋,琺瑯色彩豐富,厚重華美,仍保留著乾隆朝的遺風,類似的燭台也見於其他材料如漆器、瓷器等。上海博物館藏一對乾隆帶款胭脂紅地粉彩燭台可資比較,見《Imperial Porcelain from the Shanghai Museum》,海牙,2011年,頁92至93,編號61及62;故宮博物院也藏一對嘉慶帶款黃地粉彩燭台,參閱《中國清代官窯瓷器》,上海,2003年,頁374;以上例子從器形及紋飾構圖上看,均與本器相似。
