The present lot is remarkable for the tender and naturalistic carving of the horse and foal, with the adult horse carved with its head raised in a protective poise over the playful young foal. The craftsman cleverly utilised the russet and greenish sections of the stone to denote the horses' hide adding a further visual dimension to the lively group.
