A Scottish Silver-Mounted Dress Dirk
19th Century

With bright fullered blade (small areas of pitting) double-edged towards the point and notched along the back, one side etched with the figure of St. Andrew between scrolling foliage and thistles, and on the other with the figure of a highlander between a trophy of arms and an urn of thistles, ebonised baluster grip carved in relief with scallop shells, ovals and fluted C-scrolls, silver basal mount and circular pommel engraved with scrolling foliage, the latter set with a piece of faceted glass against yellow foil in imitation of a cairngorm, in original wood-lined black leather scabbard with silver mounts pierced and engraved with symmetrical foliage on the outside, the locket with shield-shaped escutcheon engraved with owner's crests and mottos, the by-knife and fork en suite with the dirk (both with some surface rust), the knife-blade stamped with cutler's name 'John Sellers'
