An 1831 Pattern General Officer's Mameluke-Hilted Sabre
By W. James & Co., Regent St., London, Late 19th Century

With bright slightly curved blade (areas of rust patination) double-edged at the clipped-back point and etched over half its length on one side with maker's details, foliate scrollwork and crowned 'VR' cypher, and on the other with foliate scrollwork and crossed sword and baton between crossed branches of palm, laurel and oak, regulation hilt with gilt mounts including guard cast and chased on both sides with foliage against a punched ground and centred on a crossed sword and baton within a wreath, ivory grips, and pommel pierced for its bullion sword-knot (some wear), in its brass scabbard with two rings for suspension
