Two Russian 1881 Pattern Trooper's Shashkas
No. 1009, Dated 1889 And No. 118, Dated 1914

Each with slightly curved fullered blade double-edged at the point and inscribed on one side at the forte 'From Adler. South Russia. May 2 1920 C.S.', regulation brass-mounted hilt comprising knuckle-guard extending to form a downcurved ring quillon, pommel-cap with domed top, and diagonally ribbed wooden grip, each in original brass-mounted wooden scabbard covered in brown leather and retaining its leather suspension straps (some wear and minor damage) (8)

Given to the vendor's father by a Cossack soldier at Adler, South Russia, on 2 May 1920, whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Ajax at the time of the evacuation of refugees from Odessa

Offered with six photographs taken at the time including one showing a group of Cossacks, one of whom is holding what is believed to be one of the shashka's offered in this lot
