Two Large Greek Silver Buckles (Porppes)
19th Century

Each of characteristic form, the first comprising a male and female clasp of circular form, each embossed and chased with a border of lobes and foliage enclosing further foliate panels between scallop shells above slender bands of niello, and centred on a circular boss en suite including a double-headed eagle, all against punched grounds, the outer mounts (one replaced) each cast and chased with foliage inhabited by a pair of birds and serpents, the female clasp with waisted central plate en suite and centred on an oval boss nielloed with the figure of Athena; the second embossed and chased overall with foliage, double-headed eagles and birds highlighted with niello and within nielloed borders, the circular bosses each with nielloed star centred on a riveted finial chased with foliage (2)
