A Fine And Rare Greek Kilij Commemorating The Battle Of Arcole In 1796
Reign Of King Othon (1832-1862)

With broad curved blade of characteristic form double-edged towards the point (some pitting) in front of the yelman, the latter chiselled with an arabesque on each side, the back of the blade chiselled with a slender medial line between arabesques and flanked by a narrow fuller, the forte inlaid in gold with a symmetrical panel of arabesques, a cartouche-shaped panel enclosing 'Mashallah' in nasta'liq beyond, hilt comprising silver-gilt quillon-block nielloed with foliage involving a building on a martial trophy on each side, all against a punched ground and with pointed langets and tapering quillons, the latter each with bud-shaped terminal en suite, silver grip-strap nielloed with a repeated design of foliage, and rounded rhinoceros horn grips (minor insect damage) indented for the fingers, and rounded pommel pierced for a sword-knot and with nielloed drop-shaped silver mount on each side, in original wood-lined silver-gilt scabbard elaborately nielloed over each side with the Greek royal arms between lion supporters and martial trophies, further martial trophies involving buildings and a lion, a townscape, foliage, and a representation of Napoleon Bonaparte leading his troops over the bridge of Arcole, a panel inscribed in Greek and dated '15 N: 1796' beneath, all against gilt punched grounds and between nielloed borders of running foliage, shaped suspension mounts en suite and each with a ring for suspension, and retaining much of its original gilding

The Battle of Arcole was fought between the French and Austrian forces on 15-17 November 1796 southeast of Verona during the War of the First Coalition, a part of the French Revolutionary Wars

King Othon of Greece (1815-1867) was a Bavarian Prince who became the first modern King of Greece in 1832 under the Convention of London. He reigned until his disposition in 1862
