A Rare Viking Sword Of Peterson Type L And Wheeler Type V
Mid-9th To Mid-10th Century

In excavated condition, with double-edged blade, hilt comprising arched quillons tapering to the tips and retaining traces of silver-inlaid line decoration on one side, a corresponding metal iron strap above secured by a rivet on each side and enclosing remains of organic material, slender rectangular tang, and copper-alloy pommel of lobed 'cocked-hat' form on an inverted arch and secured by a central rivet (some flaking)
70.5 cm. blade, 83.2 cm. overall
