Footnotes
RUSKIN GIVES THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM TWENTY-FIVE TURNER WATERCOLOURS: in March 1861 he had presented to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, forty-eight Turner watercolours, following this up with his gift to Cambridge in May (complete with the cabinet in which the drawings were housed). His disciple, Sydney Cockerell, was to build on this gift when he became director of the museum, by acquiring further Turner watercolours as well as drawings by Ruskin himself.
