WAUGH (EVELYN)

Helena, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED "For Tony, the best I am able to do from Evelyn" on front free endpaper, publisher's cloth, 8vo, Chapman & Hall, 1950

Footnotes

Inscribed copy of Helena, Waugh's favourite of his own books. "The indifferent reception given to what Evelyn believed to be by far his own best book was the greatest disappointment of his whole literary life" (Christopher Sykes, Evelyn Waugh. A Biography, 1975, p.337). Writing of "Waugh's talk" Anthony Powell remembered it appreciatively as "at once unexpected, logical, perverse, wildly laughable, annoying, and altogether of the man himself" (Powell, Miscellaneous Verdicts, 1990, p.317).
