Footnotes

FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED WITH A FINE CARICATURE DRAWING depicting the profile of a man in a dinner jacket (?self-portrait) and a large-eyed woman in a veil, to Anthony Powell, "the host of Bats". The occasion of the inscription, and to what it refers is a tantalising mystery, the freedom of its execution suggesting that it was done in a moment of spontaneity. The second copy is inscribed somewhat sheepishly, Waugh apologising for previously "having abused your hospitality by defacing a copy of this story". Christopher Sykes considered Scott-King's Modern Europe "a masterly minor work" writing that "it is beautifully thought out and constructed and those who enjoy Evelyn as a clown can find here all the farce they can want" (Sykes, Evelyn Waugh, 1975, pp.297-299).
