First edition of White's celebrated account of the the voyage of the First Fleet and the settlement in New South Wales under the command of Arthur Phillip. It includes an extensive section on the visit to Brazil en route. "This is a sumptuous edition which is much sought after because of the magnificent plates of animals" (Borba de Moraes). The prospectus is rare, with only the British Library copy listed on ESTC.

Provenance: James Edward Smith (1759-1828, the botanist and principal founding member and first President of the Linnean Society), ink ownership inscription on title. See illustration on preceding page.
