Footnotes

Provenance:
Purchased from Arthur Ackerman & Son, Inc, New York, 1 August 1968.

The partnership of Grimalde and Johnson are well respected for their series of small ebonised clocks and timepieces, often with an alarm feature. Perhaps the stand out design feature was the stirrup-shaped gilt brass handle that surmounted the small cases. The design of the current lot is one of the most iconic of the late Regency period and is instantly recognisable as one of their own, much in the same way as are Vulliamy's marble and lion drum clocks.

A similar example by Johnson was sold in these rooms 17 June 2003.
