A rare late 18th century French ormolu and white marble swinging skeleton clock with automatic sunrise and sunset shutters

Jacques Breant, Abaye St Martin
Modelled as a lyre with mask and fruiting vine mounts, over acanthus moulded, reeded and beaded arms raised on an oval socle base with inset foliate mask panel supported on four ovoid gilt feet, the signed enamel Roman and Arabic dial with centre seconds within the concentric sunrise/sunset aperture, the articulated black shutters rising and falling against the pale blue ground with solar time indication via a gilt hand modelled as the Sun, the centre left open to reveal the skeletonised twin train movement with pinwheel escapement and outside countwheel strike on a bell, the shaped plates suspended by a gridiron with knife-edge suspension. 52cm (20.5in)
