Provenance
From the Pickering-Northey house in Salem, Massachusetts.
A virtually identical gasolier is illustrated Henry N. Hooper & Co., Sample book of Lamps, Candelabra and Lighting Fixtures for Gas and Oil, (Boston, MA, 1858); the four-light model was #606.
Built in 1814 on Salem's Chestnut Street, the Pickering-Northey house epitomized the best of Federal brick architecture in historic Salem; it was built by members of the Pickering and Northey families of Salem, who made their fortunes from the China trade.
