Footnotes
Provenance
by repute, from the Hoopes family
Acquired from David Stockwell, Wilmington, Delaware, 1978
The striated and elongated pad feed on this high chest of drawers distinguish it from others and this may be a singular example.
The provenance to the Hoopes family as purported by David Stockwell does not survive with this high chest but may include several Chester County craftsmen, including John Hoopes of Brandywine Township (bord 1745); Abraham Hoopes of Edgmont Township (chair maker, born 1775); and Rees Hoopes of Goshen Township (turner, born 1782) as well as several craftsmen born after 1800.
For a greater discussion of the Hoopes family and the larger production of furniture in Chester County, see Margaret Berwind Schiffer, Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1966).
