Nuttman lived in Newark, New Jersey, where, from 1835 to 1872, he is listed as a "Fancy, Sign and Ornamental, Fancy and Chair Painter, Japanner and Bronzer." From 1863 to 1868, his address was at 8 Coes Place, but in other listings, he was at 113 Market Street.
While this work isn't signed, it bears very close parallels to one signed and illustrated in several publications including as the cover of Richard B. Woodward, American Folk Painting: Selections from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Wiltshire III, The Virginia Museum (Richmond, VA), 1977, cat. No. 47, pp. 96-97.
A second related example of Nuttman's work that was also extensively published and exhibited was sold at Sotheby's New York, The Folk Art Collection of Jon and Rebecca Zoler, January 22, 2005, lot 662 and sold for $168,000.
