Arthur Howell was born October 20, 1748 in Philadelphia to Joseph Howell and Hanna Hudson and his family lived on Chestnut street, between Third and Fourth streets. He became a Quaker minister at an early age but also owned a leather store on Chestnut Street. He married Mary Mott in 1778 and they had seven children. He died in 1816.
