The original state service commissioned from Haviland and Company during the Hayes administration was comprised of 562 pieces with 130 distinctive decorations. This popular plate was created by Theodore R. Davis, who granted to Haviland the right to duplicate pieces for sale to the public. These pieces are distinguished by the overglaze blue patent mark and date of 1880. Remaining sought-after today, similar examples, all bearing the same marks, occasionally come to market, including one that sold at Christie's in 2009 for $4,375 and a pair that sold at Brunk Auctions in 2012 for $5,520.
