A pair of George IV sterling silver and turned-wood decanter coasters

by Smith, Tate & Co., Nicholson & Holt, Sheffield, 1826
Each with a convex reeded body and gadrooned rim, the center of the turned wood base fitted with a silver boss engraved with the mottoed emblem for the Rivers family. height 2in (5.1cm); greatest diameter 6in (15.2cm).

Footnotes

Both crests pertain to the RIVERS family.

The family's heraldic origin was with Sir John Rivers who was Lord Mayor of London in 1568. The swan emerging from a bunch of reeds is allusive to his name. The crest of a bull, also used by the family, is associated with the motto SECUS RIVOS AQUARUM and translates as By Rivers of Waters.
