Footnotes

The form and decoration of this urn is based on a drinking vessel uncovered during an archaeological dig in Pompeii in 1835. During antiquity ivy was thought to be a remedy for headaches as well as a symbol for immortality.

Examples of such skyphoi can be found in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Musée d'Archéologie nationale et Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, (illustrated in Blair, Claude, ed. The History of Silver, New York, 1987, p. 19), and the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
