An Edward VII sterling silver two-handled shaped rectangular tray
The center engraved with large armorial shield above the motto: VIRTUS VITIUM FUGERE, on four scroll feet, weight approximately 161oz troy
height 1 3/4in (4.4cm); length over handles 28in (71.1cm); width 18in (45.7cm).
Footnotes
The shield is for Edward Otway Whitby (born 12 October 1883) and for any other sons of the marriage (18 Nov 1880) of Edward Garrow Whitby, JP, DL, of Bishton Hall and Colwich, Staffordshire, and Henrietta Evelyn Otway of Brighton.
The Whitby family name derives from the town of Whitebay, Yorkshire. Their ancestry can be traced back to Thomas Whitby who represented York in the Parliament of 1298. Henrietta Otway was daughter of a nineteenth century barrister, baronet and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
