A set of twelve George II sterling silver soup plates
Each with gadrooned rim and shaped border engraved with a coat-of-arms, total weight approximately 212oz troy
height 1 3/8in (3.4cm); greatest diameter 9 3/4in (24.7cm).
Footnotes
Engraved with the cartouche bearing the arms of HOTHAM of Scarborough, Yorkshire charged with a baronet's escutcheon. The baronetcy was created in 1621.
The date 1732 marks them for Sir Charles Hotham, 5th baronet. He had succeeded his father as baronet in 1722 and also succeeded him as Member of Parliament for Beverley, Yorkshire and was appointed Groom of the Bedchamber at the court of George II. He married Lady Gertrude Stanhope in 1724 and was succeeded on his death in 1738 by his eldest son, also Charles who also followed on as Groom of the Bedchamber.
